Melina Pires

Chorégraphe, Interprète

Based in Tiohtià:ke/Mooniyang/Montreal, Mélina Elisa Pires is a multidisciplinary artist of Afro-Mexican heritage. In addition to her college studies in visual arts and dance, she nurtured her curiosity for percussive rhythms and polyrhythms from a young age. To deepen her artistic practice, she enrolled in the Dance Department at UQAM, from which she graduated as a choreographer. She then joined the dance development program at the Nyata Nyata Creation Centre.

This path allowed her to meet established artists such as Dominique Porte, Alan Lake, Danièle Desnoyers, and Zab Maboungou. She presents choreographic projects and participates as a performer in Passerelle 840, Usawa Production, Danse buissonnières, and Explo-Labo. Mélina builds a dialogue between her multiple interests through a constantly evolving choreographic writing process. Her wish is to create cultural and community bridges through rhythms that contribute to the decolonization of the arts.
