Dance-Theatre Performer Wanted for Young Audiences Production

Foolish Operations is reviving Dans la maison des oiseaux, a performance for one dance-theatre artist and two musicians, scheduled for April/May 2025, with performances on the Island of Montréal in May 2025 and future tours in Eastern Canada.

Dans la maison des oiseaux is an interactive performance by Foolish Operations designed for young children (ages 3 to 8) and their accompanying adults.

Under a tree, through dance, music, magical objects, and illustrations, we rediscover the world of birds and trees with a spirit of connection to family and nature. Blankets hold the secret of this performance – transforming into leaves, clouds, and even birds. After each show, families are invited to move and play together.

We are looking for a bilingual (French/English) dance-theatre artist (age 25-45) who lives on the Island of Montréal to play the role of Quinn, a child aged 6 to 8.

Compensation: Above the rates recommended by CADA West (Foolish Operations is based in Vancouver, BC). https://cadawest.org/rates.html

Time commitment: Approximately 2 to 6 hours of online work in April, followed by a 6-day rehearsal week (daytime hours, starting early) from April 28 to May 3, 2025.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Dance improvisation and somatic practices.
  • Ease with moving at all levels (standing, floor work, etc.).
  • Ability to learn and deliver a scripted text.
  • Comfortable singing in front of an audience alongside live musicians.
  • Experience working with and teaching children.
  • Experience with puppetry is a plus.
  • Open to performing in unconventional settings like parks, libraries, community centers, and daycares. The May 2025 performances will take place in a black box theatre.

In line with our commitment to equity, we encourage applications from Indigenous artists, racialized individuals, and newcomers to Canada.

Applicants are invited to submit their photo, a 250-word biography, CV, and a short letter of interest to community@foolishoperations.org by February 26, 2025.

Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted and asked to submit an audition video. At that stage, we will conduct reference and background checks, given the vulnerable populations we work with. The selected artist will be confirmed by March 4, 2025.
