Refine and elevate your style with Spicey Landé,  a renowned choreographer and leading figure in Quebec’s hip-hop dance scene.

Registration deadline: January 26, 2025

Culture Laval offers, in partenership with the Regroupement Québécois de la danse, a series of master classes over a week with Spicey Landé, accompanied by a DJ. This series is designed for street dance performers who want to deconstruct the style to adapt it to a conventional scene, deepen their understanding of hip-hop dance, or simply refine the execution of the movements.

During the three sessions, participants will delve into several dance techniques that shape and inspire the artistic work of Spicey Landé where they will be able to discover the different facets of her choreographic language. They will be invited to improvise (Freestyle) following directives, sometimes clear and sometimes felt, allowing them to appropriate the choreographic form.

The improvisation sessions will be danced, spoken or otherwise – allowing the performer to use the means most favorable to their intervention.

Schedule

Attendance on all three dates is mandatory to register:

  • Tuesday, February 4, 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
  • Wednesday, February 5, 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
  • Thursday, February 6, 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Objectives

  • Develop your performance style in hip-hop dance.
  • Learn the role of intuition in choreography and interpretation.
  • Adapt hip-hop style to the context of live performance in front of an audience.
  • Promote cohesion within the Laval dance community.

Spicey Landé © Noire Mouliom

Montreal choreographer and major figure in Quebec hip-hop dance, ‘Spicey’ Landé  began her dance career as a performer and teacher. As an independent choreographer, she presented three works in Quebec before 2015, including Retrospek (2008, 9 performers), which influenced a generation of Montreal street dancers.

Retrospek was awarded the RIDEAU-Entrées en scène Loto-Québec bursary in 2009, and was presented by some twenty presenters. At the same time, the Bust A Move festival she founded (2005-2015) establishes itself as Canada’s largest street dance competition (up to 3,500 spectators and participants annually). La TOHU became co-presenter in 2010.

A hip-hop dance performer and teacher for over two decades, ‘Spicey’ is regularly invited to teach and judge street dance competitions here and internationally. Strongly committed to supporting up-and-coming street dancers, she has been conceiving and directing B-Side since 2019, an annual event produced by Ebnflōh dedicated to the development of street dancers. She also offers workshops and mentoring to emerging artists. She has served on several boards, including that of the Regroupement québécois de la danse, where she was vice-president from 2020 to 2022, and that of Jack Of All Trades (Festival JOAT) since 2021.

This training program, offered by Culture Laval in collaboration with the Conseil de la formation continue Arts et culture de l’Île-de-Montréal (CFC) and the Regroupement québécois de la danse, is made possible thanks to the financial support of the Quebec government, through the Intervention-Compétences program administered by Compétence Culture.
