Iron Woman, GRACE embodies the fantasy of the mother, the big sister, and the wife all in one. Through her multiple and multiplied presences, she embraces our fears of a disembodied future and gives them the comforting smell of homemade cookies. GRACE possesses the elegance of a peacock, whose flamboyant tail distracts us from its fragile legs that struggle to bear its weight.
In this solo created at the request of Laurie-Anne Langis, Marie Béland questions the omnipresent female archetype in the current field of robotics. Sophia, Grace, Aiko, Ameca, Jia Jia: for the technology industry, the female gender is a model to be replicated. Fantasies of the submissive woman, housewife, mother, sexual object, at everyone’s service—do female humanoids give men renewed permission to freely use women? Will these robot women, in turn, take control of our humanity?
