Action Theater is a unique form of theatrical improvisation developed by American artist Ruth Zaporah. This workshop will introduce the basic principles of the practice. Through rigorous yet playful exercises that isolate and then recombine movement, sound and language, we expand our range of improvisational tools to become more open to the present moment. Always working from an embodied state, we develop spatial acuity and access to our imagination to transform our creative impulses into clear images and stories. This technique confronts us with our habits and opens up new possibilities. We pay attention to the details of our physical choices, as well as to the quality and range of our vocalizations. By perceiving words and speech as physical actions, we’ll construct monologues or narrative plots. Working in solos, duets, trios or all together, the class will start with vocal and physical warm-ups, continue with exercises and finish with informal presentations.
