This 4-day training course aims to develop the skills needed to position and sell shows in the appropriate markets, as well as to develop international business relationships. At the end of this training, participants will have the knowledge they need to undertake international marketing initiatives.

* Prerequisite: Basic touring experience and willingness to develop international touring strategies.

 

Learning objectives

  • Offer concrete tools and a variety of best practices to better understand the global cultural ecosystem and help agents meet the challenges of disseminating the performing arts in different markets around the world. Each participant will be invited to invest in his or her own export strategy, or to sketch out the broad outlines of such a strategy;
  • Propose a theoretical framework specific to performing arts management and foster the development of a common vocabulary to accelerate understanding of important concepts. All theoretical concepts will be supported by real-life case studies. Experts will be invited to illustrate issues based on their experience in the field.

Who should attend this training?

Performing arts agents and managers wishing to acquire the skills needed to develop foreign markets and manage international tours. More experienced agents will find an opportunity to upgrade and improve their marketing practices.

Participants must be permanent residents of Quebec. They may be artists, self-employed workers, cultural workers in the performing arts or graduate students in the performing arts.

 

Instructors

Charles Vallerand is an independent consultant with over 30 years’ experience in cultural policy, public service broadcasting and international cooperation. Until recently, he was program optimization specialist at Telefilm Canada, where he led the pan-Canadian consultation that led to the re-launch of major funding programs. He is also the editor-in-chief of Cultures in the Digital Age, a weekly press review of emerging issues and practices in Canada and abroad. He is the lead author of “Culture in Crisis: A Policy Guide for a Resilient Creative Sector”, published by UNESCO in October 2020. Charles has led numerous capacity-building missions in Rwanda, Tunisia, Indonesia, Djibouti, China, Mongolia, Zimbabwe and Colombia. Most recently, he helped Namibia reform its copyright law and Palestine plan the creation of a national film institute. He is the former Executive Director of the Canadian Coalition for Cultural Diversity and Secretary General of the International Federation of Coalitions for Cultural Diversity (IFCCD). He began his career as a policy analyst in the broadcasting sector at the Canadian Department of Communications, was Director of La Francophonie at the Department of Canadian Heritage, Cultural Attaché at the Canadian Embassy in Paris, Director of Planning and Director of Communications at TV5 Québec Canada, Director of Corporate Affairs at CBC/Radio-Canada and Director of Communications at Canada’s International Centre for Human Rights and Democratic Development. He has also been a lecturer at Université Senghor and École publique d’administration du Québec.

Gilles Doré, General Manager of CINARS since March 2022, is a senior manager in performing arts exports. Having worked in the performing arts industry for over 30 years, first as a professional actor and then as a cultural manager, Mr. Doré has developed a recognized expertise in international development strategy for the performing arts, having worked in this field for more than 20 years. His career has also given him an excellent knowledge of show production and creative center management. He has a seasoned vision of the challenges facing the local and international performing arts in a highly volatile context.

 

This training is offered by the Conseil Québécois du Théâtre (CQT) in collaboration with CINARS, the Regroupement québécois de la danse (RQD) and En Piste. It is made possible thanks to the financial support of Compétence Culture’s Interventions-Compétences program, and is offered in collaboration with the Conseil de la formation continue Arts et Culture de l’Île-de-Montréal.
