Management and technical specifications: the art of communicating your needs – La DSR
Whether you’re performing alone or with others, a technical specification is an essential tool for ensuring the best possible conditions for your performance. It covers all the technical details of a production: duration, equipment required, schedule, reception, stage layout, what the venue must provide, what you bring, etc.
Accompanied by a guest expert, the trainer will present the particularities of the technical specification and its essential components for successful collaboration with technical teams in theatres or in situ. She will give you numerous examples of elements to consider and list in order to properly communicate your needs and avoid unpleasant surprises. Using real-life situations, the trainer will also be able to anchor the content in concrete situations to help learners prepare their technical specifications.
Finally, at the end of the course, participants will be able to optimize the way they do things, to make it easier for them to enter the room and communicate with their broadcast partners.

Objectives
- Understand the role of the technical manager and demystify his duties and functions.
- Understand the steps involved in drawing up a technical specification and the essential elements to include in its preparation.
- Learn how to identify your technical needs and describe them effectively.
- Know the other tools to consider during production: schedules and technical plans.
- Understand the concepts of project adaptability for touring.
- Learn and understand the elements that need to be optimized in the context of a double bill and/or fast-track entry.
Who can benefit from this training?
Artists and cultural workers with little or no experience in production management, or who are just starting out in project management.
Trainer
A graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada, Émilie Martel has worked as a production manager in dance and theater with several renowned choreographers and directors, including Louise Lecavalier, Louise Bédard, Sylvain Émard, Virginie Brunelle, Caroline Laurin-Beaucage, Martin Messier, Philippe Ducros and Christian Lapointe. She also assisted opera director Oriol Tomas for over 10 years on local and international creations.
Since 2012, Émilie has developed a close relationship with Création Dans la Chambre and, since 2019, continues the dialogue as general director with the organization’s artistic co-directors Félix-Antoine Boutin, Gabriel Plante, Odile Gamache and Julie Basse.
With a wealth of production experience in dance and theater, Émilie Martel joined forces with La danse sur les routes du Québec in 2017 as production director for Parcours Danse, and then piloted the 2019 edition as co-director of the event. She is now co-general manager and administrative director with Sibyllines alongside Brigitte Haentjens since 2021, in addition to continuing her collaboration with Création Dans la Chambre.
Gest expert
Anne-Sara Gendron has a wealth of experience in the performing arts. Passionate about space as a performance venue, she is interested in the design of scenic spaces through scenography and lighting design. She also works as technical director for creations as well as local and international tours. Interested in the performing arts, particularly in their ever-changing relationship with the public, Anne-Sara is equally at home in theater, dance, music and performance.
